Salem Police Detective Retires (Photo) -10/30/17

Salem Police Detective Jeff Staples retired on October 27 after dedicating 30 years to protecting the citizens of Salem. Detective Staples began his law enforcement career in 1983 as a reserve officer for the Portland Police Bureau and was hired by the Salem Police Department in August of 1987. During his career, Detective Staples worked as an Officer, Senior Officer, Detective and Acting in Capacity Sergeant. He was also a member of the department SWAT team for 12 years. Detective Staples was active within the department as one of the founders of the Salem Police Department Confrontational Simulations training program and served as an instructor in that discipline as well as on the department Trauma Team. He was also the Union President for over 10 years, well known for his passion in serving the officers in the department. Detective Staples established himself as an expert in child abuse and sexual assault investigations during his 19 years working in the Criminal Investigations Section. His dedication to thoroughly and properly investigating these crimes was evident in the recognition and respect he received from throughout the criminal justice community. He was active in providing training in these areas, and he was well known for mentoring and helping other investigators. Salem Police Chief Jerry Moore stated "Our law enforcement community took a hit with the retirement of Jeff Staples. Jeff was committed to making Salem a better place to live, and his work was evidence of that commitment. He has been a good friend to all of us and to our community." Detective Staples is also known as a dedicated father and husband, and he is looking forward to enjoying time with his family. The Salem Police Department wishes Detective Staples the best in his retirement. ###
