Safe storage of prescription medications is one easy way to prevent opioid addiction from ever beginning.

In El Paso County:

  • Opioid related deaths (both accidental and suicide) increased from 82 in 2019 to 118 in 2020

  • In 2020, there were a total of 24 drug overdoses among 15 to 24 year-olds.

  • 29.9% of youth report it would be sort of or very easy to get prescription drugs without a prescription.

  • In 2019, unintentional poisoning resulted in the deaths of 3 people ages 0-17.

What You Can do:

  • Keep medications up, away and out of reach.
  • Put medicine away after each use.
  • Do not tell children medicine is candy.
  • Properly dispose of unused or expired medications. To find locations, visit takebackday.com.
