News Release
Oregonians Across the State Celebrate Clean and Healthy Waterways With SOLVE - 09/17/22

Portland, Ore., September 17, 2022 – From September 1 through September 30, Oregonians are participating in SOLVE’s annual Beach & Riverside Cleanup, in partnership with the Oregon Lottery. The Beach & Riverside Cleanup is a volunteer event aimed at improving the health of our waterways through litter pick-up and habitat restoration work. Most Beach & Riverside Cleanup projects take place on September 17.

For many Oregonians, the Beach & Riverside Cleanup has become an annual family tradition. Parents can bring their children to cleanup projects and demonstrate the importance of caring for and tending to our shared environment. SOLVE encourages volunteers to bring their reusable gloves, buckets, and bags, to projects to promote the sustainability of litter cleanup events.

Since the event’s inception, more than 2.5 million pounds of litter and marine debris have been collected across Oregon.

Litter left on the street eventually ends up in the sewer systems, which pollutes our rivers, and ultimately becomes marine debris in the Pacific Ocean. The most common litter items include cigarette butts and microplastics, followed by plastic bags and Styrofoam. Litter and marine debris pose a threat not only to our environment but also to the fragile ecosystems that exist within our oceans.

Most Beach & Riverside Cleanup projects occurred on September 17, the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup Day. Whether volunteers participated in one of the dozens of projects on the Oregon Coast or at an inland cleanup, every participant directly impacted Oregon’s water quality and environmental health.

There were many ways for Oregonians to get involved with SOLVE to improve our environment through volunteer-led litter cleanup and habitat restoration projects.  SOLVE supports volunteer projects year-round. To learn more and get involved, please visit
