St. Mary's Academy Students Earn 118 Scholastic Art And Writing Awards (Photo) -02/26/18

Portland, Ore.-St. Mary's Academy students received 118 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for creative projects submitted earlier this year. This tremendous achievement demonstrates the high caliber of St. Mary's writing and arts programs, as well as the widespread talent and creativity of its student body. This year, many students entered projects which they developed as part of an assignment for an art or creative writing class at St. Mary's Academy. However, students also submitted projects which they envisioned and pursued on their own time. Throughout the writing and artistic process, faculty members provided encouragement and resources to enable students to participate and succeed. "We are extremely honored and proud to have so many Scholastic Art and Writing Award winners at St. Mary's Academy. This great accomplishment reflects both the talent and hard work of our students, as well as the dedication of our faculty members who make themselves available to students for feedback and support outside of the classroom," said Principal Nicole Foran. In the 2018 Portland Metro Scholastic Art Awards, St. Mary's students submitted 147 entries and earned 47 awards for excellence, including 20 Gold Key awards. Participants submitted work in a wide array of media including, but not limited to: drawing, painting, photography, jewelry, digital art and mixed media. The 20 Gold Key Award winners displayed their work at the Portland Metro Scholastic Award Exhibition at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in early February and will represent St. Mary's Academy in the National Scholastic Art Awards program. In the writing category, 41 students won a total of 71 awards, including 16 Gold Key awards, a record number for St. Mary's Academy. Students submitted written works in a variety of categories including: short fiction, poetry, personal essay, memoir, dramatic script, Science Fiction, journalism and much more. The 16 Gold Key winners will represent St. Mary's as their work advances to the National Scholastic Writing Awards competition. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards is the country's oldest and most prestigious competition of its kind. St. Mary's Academy applauds its many talented artists and writers for their extraordinary work.
