Portland, OR – 7.11.24 – The Portland Fruit Tree Project (PFTP) is thrilled to announce the start of its 16th fruit harvesting season. The fruit trees brimming with a particularly bountiful harvest, we are eagerly looking forward to our most fruitful season yet!
Our team has been diligently preparing for this year's harvest, and the abundance of fruit promises a rewarding experience for all involved. However, the success of our harvest depends heavily on the support and participation of our dedicated volunteers. The more hands we have to help, the greater the impact we can make in our community.
“We’re excited about the potential this season holds, and are already harvesting cherries and early plums, which is amazing” said Heather Keisler Fornes at PFTP. “The trees are loaded with fruit, and we are only 50 harvests away from our 1,000 harvest. To date, we have gleaned over 447,000 pounds of fruit from the urban canopy! We encourage volunteers of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to join us in our efforts to gather and distribute fresh fruit to those in need.”
The Portland Fruit Tree Project's mission is to increase equitable access to healthy food and strengthen communities by empowering neighbors to share in the harvest and care of city-grown produce.
Each year, PFTP partners with homeowners, local businesses, and community organizations to identify fruit trees in need of harvesting. The fruit collected is then distributed to local food banks, shelters, and families in need, ensuring that no fruit goes to waste. Volunteering with PFTP is a fantastic opportunity to connect with nature, meet new people, and contribute to the well-being of our community. No prior experience is necessary – we provide all the training and equipment needed for a safe and enjoyable harvest.
