Cleanup Superheroes Encouraged to Attend a Halloween Themed October 30 Downtown Portland Volunteer Litter Cleanup Day (Photo) - 10/16/20

EDITOR'S NOTE: A media advisory with media staging information will be sent October 28.

Portland Ore. October 16, 2020 SOLVE, Portland Business Alliance, and Portland Lodging Alliance, with the support of Melvin Mark Companies and Downtown Development Group LLC, are coming together to host a Halloween-themed Downtown Portland Volunteer Litter Cleanup Day on Friday, October 30.

In September, SOLVE, Portland Business Alliance, and Portland Lodging Alliance partnered to host two volunteer litter cleanups on September 3 and September 30. During these two events, more than 800 volunteers took to the streets of the Rose City to give back through the simple act of picking up litter. Nearly 6,500 pounds of trash was collected from parks, city streets, and sidewalks throughout the downtown corridor.

The Downtown Volunteer Litter Cleanup has since become a monthly occurrence. These volunteer events not only revitalize the city by making it cleaner and healthier, but also by encouraging residents to visit downtown, spend time in its parks, and visit local shops and restaurants.

The event on October 30 comes with a Halloween-themed twist. Participants are encouraged to wear costumes and enter SOLVE’s costume contest for a chance to win cool prizes. Cleanup superheroes are encouraged to attend!

The event will begin at the following locations throughout Downtown Portland: South Park Blocks at the Oregon Historical Society, The Benson Hotel, Providence Park, and 40 LBS Coffee Bar.

Volunteer check-in will be available from 8:45 AM to 9:30 AM to allow for social distancing and the event will run until 11:30 AM. Pre-registration is required and interested community members should visit www.solveoregon.org to register for the event.

The event will follow all of SOLVE’s COVID-19 Safety Guidelines which include requiring participants to wear a face covering, maintain a minimum of six feet of distance, and providing sanitized cleanup equipment to volunteers.

Each piece of litter removed by volunteers eliminates the chance of it entering nearby waterways, like the Willamette River, especially during heavy fall rain. Disposal for the event is donated by Central City Concern.
