Portland Business Alliance board of directors endorses Beaverton School Levy; Levy renewal supports teacher positions, maintaining class sizes - 03/13/18

Portland, Ore. -- Today, the Portland Business Alliance board of directors announced its endorsement of the Beaverton School Levy for the May 2018 ballot.

If passed, the levy raises $165 million over five years, allowing Beaverton schools to save 300 teacher positions, maintain class sizes and work to ensure students are prepared for post-secondary success. The levy would renew a 2013 local option levy at existing of $1.25 per $1,000 assessed property value.

"It is critical that we support the Beaverton School Levy, which supports student success from elementary school to their post-secondary education," said Sandra McDonough, president and CEO of the Portland Business Alliance. "This levy has already made a positive impact, raising $128 million since voters approved it in 2013, with 100 percent remaining in the schools to fund teaching positions and help ensure smaller class sizes."

Alliance board endorsements are based on a process that includes candidate questionnaires and interviews conducted by its endorsement committee, followed by a vote by the full board. Two-thirds of the board members present must agree before an endorsement is made.
