Wasabi teams to compete in Portland Dragon Boat Festival
Portland, Oregon – Wasabi is planning to have seven teams compete in the Portland Dragon Boat Festival to be held on the Willamette River on Sept. 7 and 8, 2019.
The teams will include cancer-survivors, visually-impaired paddlers and the high school-age team.
- Wasabi SOAR – Survivors on a River, a team of women cancer-survivors and supporters.
- Wasabi Women’s Program – Two boats plus Women’s masters and senior masters races. The women’s premier team has won a berth to the 2020 Club Crew World Championships in Aix-les-Bains in the French Alps.
- Wasabi Kraken – High school team from Portland.
- Wasabi Burn – Two boat plus mixed masters and open races – premier team with paddlers under 40 years old.
- Wasabi VIP – A team of visually impaired paddlers.
The teams competes out of the Portland Boathouse in its temporary location at 403 SE Caruthers Ave., which also hosts a variety of other competitive paddling teams.
About Wasabi Paddling Club
Competition, community and comraderies, on and off the water, The Wasabi Paddling Club is a nonprofit Dragon Boat and Outrigger paddling club located at the Portland Boathouse and is dedicated to the participation and promotion of the national sports of Dragon Boat and Outrigger Canoe racing. The club’s charter includes assisting novice through experienced paddlers in the community.
The club has more than 350 members, eight dragon boat teams and an outrigger canoe program. Teams include: Wasabi Fury, a premier mixed team with 40 paddlers; Wasabi Grand Masters, an over age 50 team with 30 paddlers; Wasabi Kraken, a high school team of 15 paddlers; Wasabi VIP, a team of 30 visually-impaired paddlers; Wasabi Special Dragons, a team of 30 paddlers with special needs; Wasabi SOAR, a team of 40 cancer survivors and supporters; Wasabi Tide Runners, a team of 30 paddlers based in the Nehalem area; and Wasabi Women’s Program, which has 80 female paddlers.
