Space professionals educate students during DeSTEMber
SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — U.S. Space Force Guardians from Peterson and Schriever Air Force Bases virtually spoke about science, technology, engineering and mathematics with 37 classrooms across 20 states, three countries and one U.S. territory during the month of December.
The initiative, named DeSTEMber, is a USSF effort aimed to celebrate the Service’s first birthday by investing in the future. Participants educated third through sixth graders about the importance of STEM and space education and careers.
The program spanned the service from Gen. John “Jay” Raymond, USSF chief of space operations and NASA Astronaut Col. Nick Hague to USSF Guardians engaging 370 students in the local area. Members from Space Operations Command and Space Deltas 2, 3, 6, 8 and 9 participated.
In addition to DeSTEMber, the Department of Defense hosts the STARBASE educational program at 69 sites nationwide. Peterson AFB houses one location which provides “hands-on, minds-on” projects to fourth through sixth graders.
The USSF is the newest branch of the Armed Services and is part of the Department of the Air Force. The branch organizes, trains and equips space forces to protect U.S. and allied interests in space and to provide space capabilities to the joint force. Space Force’s responsibilities include developing military space professionals, acquiring military space systems, maturing the military doctrine for space power and organizing space forces to present to combatant commands.
