PeaceHealth encourages community to get flu shots - 10/07/19

Flu season typically begins in October and can ramp up quickly, and PeaceHealth is recommending that nearly everyone in our community get a flu shot. PeaceHealth patients can get their flu shot on a walk-in basis weekdays at any PeaceHealth Family Medicine Clinic, or weeknights and weekends at PeaceHealth’s Lakefront Clinic located at 1718 E. Kessler Blvd. in Longview, WA. Evening hours are 5pm-8pm; Weekend hours are Saturday 9am-5pm and Sunday 12:30pm-5pm.

Who should get vaccinated?
Influenza kills up to 50,000 people in the US every year. The vaccination is safe and effective for nearly everyone, and groups who are particularly vulnerable should make flu shots a priority. These include:

  • Anyone 65 and older
  • Children younger than 5
  • Pregnant women
  • People with certain medical conditions

When should I get vaccinated?
It takes about two weeks for the flu shot to start working. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends getting vaccinated by late October, before flu season really kicks in, so your body can create enough antibodies to protect itself against the flu.

Why should I get vaccinated?
The flu vaccine is never a 100 percent guarantee you won’t get sick, but even so, it can drastically lower your chances of falling ill. And even if you do get the flu, you’ll likely experience milder symptoms if you’ve been vaccinated. People who are vaccinated are also helping protect their families, friends, and colleagues who are unable to get vaccinated -  pregnant moms, infants, and people who are immunocompromised.

Can the flu shot give me the flu?
The flu shot is killed virus and is unable to cause disease.

Talk with your doctor
There are some people who should consult with their physician prior to getting a flu shot. These include people with an egg allergy, and people who have had Guillain-Barré syndrome, an illness that affects the central nervous system and has been associated with the flu shot. Additionally, people who have an egg allergy may be concerned about the egg ingredient used to develop the vaccine.

What else can I do to protect against the flu?
Annual flu vaccination is the best method of prevention against illness, followed by covering your cough, proper hand washing, and staying home from school or work when you are sick.
