-Portland Area STEM Leadership Symposium to Explore Best Practices for Creating a Culture of STEM Teaching and Learning-
WHAT:
On Tuesday, February 27, Parkrose School District and Discovery Education will partner to deliver an inspiring, professional development event for local educators. During the Portland Area STEM Symposium, participating educators from across the region will discuss how their school systems are engaging key stakeholders to create effective STEM education programs that prepare students for success beyond the classroom.
During this interactive professional learning opportunity, participants will share best practices for creating immersive STEM experiences for all learners. In addition, participants will share with their peers leadership strategies that support the visioning, planning and development of dynamic digital learning environments that support STEM education and other academic disciplines.
This event will begin with an indepth presentation on the rising importance of STEM education presented by Dr. Robert Corbin, Discovery Education's internationally recognized Director of Global STEM Initiatives. Following Dr. Corbin's remarks, Parkrose School District Superintendent Dr. Karen Gray will share some highlights of the district's efforts to prepare all students for success beyond the classroom through STEM.
Dr. Corbin and other participants will experience and model exceptional STEM education in a fun and engaging "STEMmersion" activity, followed by a student panel of Oregon's very own including Rohan Wagh, 2016 3M Young Scientist Challenge Finalist, Shahir Rahman, 2017 Siemens Competition Finalist, and one of Parkrose School district's students. This panel will address attendees and offer a message of inspiration on the importance of STEM education.
