Portland General Electric announced plans to build a new electric vehicle charging hub at the Eastport Plaza Shopping Center in East Portland. The newest Electric Avenue will give East Portland residents public access to reliable and affordable electric vehicle charging, furthering PGE’s and the city’s commitment to bring the benefits of electric vehicles to all communities.
Located off Southeast 82nd Avenue and Southeast Holgate Boulevard, the Eastport Plaza community charging site will be near the main thoroughfares of Interstate 205 and Highway 26/Southeast Powell Boulevard. It is strategically located to give residents convenient access to public charging and increase awareness of charging infrastructure. Construction of the East Portland Electric Avenue is scheduled to be completed in 2019.
“This new Electric Avenue charging hub is part of our continuing effort to increase access to electricity as transportation fuel for our entire region,” said Maria Pope, president and CEO of PGE. “We are thankful for the partnership with Mayor Wheeler and the City of Portland’s Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, which is another example of how working together accelerates Oregon’s transition to a clean energy future.”
To further electrify the transportation system, PGE’s Transportation Electrification Plan calls for up to six new Electric Avenues in the region. PGE will own and maintain each site at no cost to the cities. The City of Portland joins the cities of Milwaukie and Hillsboro as the latest location in the Electric Avenue charging network.
Each charging site has six stations and two types of connectors, so it can accommodate all vehicle types. A standard charge fee will be $3, and a quick charge will cost $5. Customers can also choose a $25 monthly subscription to use all Electric Avenue locations.
PGE’s original Electric Avenue, located at its World Trade Center headquarters, has charged more than 1.25 million miles of driving since its installation in October 2015. As a result, drivers avoided releasing more than 515 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the air.
