Thanksgiving Safety Tips - 11/21/24

Thanksgiving Safety Tips

We are a week away from one of the most traditional cooking days seen throughout the year and PF&R would like to share some safety tips and best practices so you can enjoy your holiday and avoid a need for our services on Thanksgiving. When spending time in the kitchen preparing food along with hosting family and guests, be sure to employ best practices to avoid a need for emergency response.

  • Never leave a pot unattended on the stove-stay in the kitchen-turn off the burners if you need to leave the kitchen.
  • Have a 3’ “clear area” to keep children away from a hot cooktop – keep children away from the stove.
  • Avoid wearing “flowing style clothing” that could catch on the handle of a pan or ignite if draped near a hot surface.
  • Avoid trip hazards on the kitchen floor.
  • Don’t have children operate lighters or matches without adult supervision.
  • Open the flue on your chimney if you are having a fire in the fireplace for the first time this fall-winter season.
  • If you are planning on frying a turkey, make sure the bird is completely thawed, and your frying device is outside and away from any overhead cover. (Watch the attached video for more turkey frying tips - How to Safely Deep Fry a Turkey on Vimeo - feel free to share this video and link as you choose).

Portland Fire & Rescue would like to wish you a happy and safe Thanksgiving Holiday.
