Portland Fire & Rescue partners with Gresham Fire on 2 overnight fires in SE Portland

Fire crews from both Portland Fire & Rescue along with our neighbors to the east at Gresham Fire & Rescue responded on 2 overnight fires that occurred in series with one fire finishing and the other fire just starting.

The first fire was sent out from BOEC at 1:09 in the Rockwood Neighborhood in the 16000 block of NE Taylor. The first arriving crew staffed by PF&R noted light smoke showing around the eave line of the attached garage area of the home. Fire attack was initiated in an offensive mode with crews from both agencies working. The efforts of the crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly and prevented the fire from entering the livable space of the home, keeping the affected area to the attached garage space. The chief officer on scene recalled this incident around 1:30 with some crews remaining on scene to assist in overhauling the area affected by the fire and other crews leaving going back into service. This fire is currently under investigation from Portland Fire & Rescue Investigations Unit.

The second fire was sent out minutes after the completion of the first fire from the dispatch center at 1:40 AM with the location being a mere 1 ½ miles south of our first fire in the 16000 block of SE Powell. Gresham Fire & Rescue arrived on scene first and took command alerting the responding crews that there was fire showing on a double wide mobile home located in a mobile home park. The command officer noted that there was an individual outside of the home, and it was discovered that this was what was believed to be the only resident present in the home at the time. During the first search of the residence a dog was located and removed from the fire structure. The fire crews extinguished the fire within 10 minutes of the call being sent out. As the incident evolved there was a question about another possible resident that was unaccounted for, so an extensive secondary search occurred and confirmed that the entire structure was clear, and all occupants were outside of the home. This fire was recalled with crews leaving the scene at 1:59 AM. This fire occurred because of an unattended cooking fire with the residence.

These fires are unrelated to each other except for the time they occurred. We would like to thank our partners at Gresham Fire & Rescue and BOEC in helping us put a good stop to these fires early. Additional thanks to Greg Muhr for responding and providing us great photography of the crews working.
