News Release
Portland Fire & Rescue Responds to Apartment Complex in SE Portland - 10/10/19

At approximately 12:45 pm, a medical call was upgraded to a Hazmat response when multiple people within an apartment complex reported symptoms of respiratory distress. An AMR unit in the area arrived to find 6-7 people complaining of respiratory irritation due to what some thought was mace or pepper spray. Fire crews arrived, monitored the air and confirmed no hazardous materials were present. No evidence of residue or containers were found to confirm the source and the odor dissipated with natural airflow. Those initially experiencing the respiratory distress and irritation stated their symptoms were improving and no one required transport to a hospital. All residents that were evacuated from the complex were cleared to return to their homes.
