PPB and PF&R Arson Investigation Squad Make Arrest in String of Downtown Fires (Photo) - 03/11/19

At approximately 5:30pm last night multiple downtown PF&R and PPB responders were notified to be on the lookout for an adult male that had set several fires around the downtown area. Jack Edward Vandorin Young was arrested later that night and charged with two counts of Arson One (each count carries a possible nine year sentence). Members of the PF&R Arson Investigation Squad and PPB had been tracking Mr Young from surveillance footage dating back to March 1 in connection with multiple false fire alarm activations. Then beginning on Friday March 8-10th it’s believed Mr Young started over 20 fires.

March 8 &9th

  • 9-10 fires in the west downtown area.

March 10

  • 625 SW Jackson- mattress next to a building, investigators discovered several recent active sets while investigating this attempt.
  • SW 10th& Washington- several recycling and garbage bins set on fire near food carts. Some evidence suggests he may have been attempting to light a food cart on fire.
  • SW 10th & Broadway- an elevator was loaded with combustible material and set on fire.

On the evening of March 10 both PPB and PF&R units were on the search for Mr. Young with coordination from PF&R Arson Investigation Squad. Mr. Young was identified at SW 17th & Alder, arrested and is currently being held at Multnomah County Jail.
