3/18/18-This afternoon just after 4 pm Portland Firefighters were called to the intersection of Interstate Avenue and Thunderbird Way. When fire crews arrived they found a freight train with 6 derailed cars. Three of the cars were lumber carriers, two were box cars and one was a tanker.
No injuries were associated with this incident. The tanker and other derailed cars were empty and were not leaking. PF&R's Hazardous Materials and Technical Rescue teams responded to assist with the evaluation of the scene. The entire train was checked and no leaks or other issues were found.
After determining that there was no immediate danger to the public, the scene was turned over to the railroad. Rail officials will be responsible for investigating the cause of the derailment and for restoring the line to normal operation. Due to the area of this incident the impact to traffic should be minimal.
