News Release
Central Oregon Lottery retailers sell two jackpot Scratch-its in a week - 02/15/18

Feb. 15, 2018 - Salem, Ore. -- Two Central Oregon Lottery retailers sold $200,000 in jackpot winning Scratch-its within two days.

On Jan. 31, the US Market #150 in Bend had a $100,000, $10 Cash Club Scratch-it win by Carl Osterkamp of Bend. Osterkamp said that he had never purchased a $10 Scratch-it before and decided to give it a try. His first $10 was the big winner.

"No flipping way!" Carl said when he got his check. "My girlfriend's sister, who was with me, wouldn't believe me."
Carl ended up taking the ticket back to the store and scanning it to prove that he actually won.

"I just about dropped to my knees when it came up as $100,000," he said. Carl is using his winnings to move himself and his girlfriend to a new place.

The next day, just up the road from Bend in Redmond, the Redmond Chevron sold a $100,000, $10 Extreme Cash Scratch-it. That prize was claimed by Jeremy Gilbertson of Redmond.

"I scratched the ticket, I looked at this, and I thought, 'This just doesn't happen to me.'" Gilbertson said. "All I could say was ahhhhh. I won $100,000 and I couldn't believe it."

Gilbertson usually plays $2 or $3 Scratch-its, but when he wins on those, he uses the winnings to purchase higher-value tickets. "I don't normally play the $10 Scratch-its," he said.

Gilbertson said his two-year wedding anniversary is coming up and he is going to take her on a trip. He also said the couple was going to pay off some bills.

"This is great," he said.

In 2017 the Bend and Redmond area retailers sold $55,000 worth of winning Scratch-its of more than $601. This year they have already sold $202,500 in winning tickets. Last year more than $4.2 million in Lottery prizes of more than $601 were won in Bend and Redmond across all games.

During the 2015-17 biennium in Deschutes County, where both the Bend and Redmond Lottery retailers are located, more than $28.9 million in Oregon Lottery proceeds were directed to economic development, parks, education and watershed enhancement.

Lottery officials recommend that you always sign the back of your tickets with each Oregon Lottery game you play, to ensure you can claim any prize you may win. In the event of winning a jackpot, players should consult with a trusted financial planner or similar professional to develop a plan for their winnings. Prize winners of more than $50,000 should contact the Lottery office to schedule an appointment to claim their prize.

Since the Oregon Lottery began selling tickets on April 25, 1985, it has earned more than $11 billion for economic development, public education, state parks and watershed enhancements. For more information on the Oregon Lottery visit www.oregonlottery.org
