News Release
Gilchrist, Sun Pass state forests in Klamath County re-open to public use - 09/10/21

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The Gilchrist and Sun Pass state forests in Klamath County have re-opened effective Friday, September 10 after a closure due to fire danger.

Recent precipitation across the two state forests prompted the decision to re-open by local officials based on on-ground conditions. This covers approximately 98,000 acres of land managed by the Oregon Department of Forestry in Klamath County. Please note this action currently applies only to the Sun Pass and Gilchrist state forests.

While these two state forests are now re-opened to public use, the area is still in extreme fire danger. Restrictions include:

  • No campfires
  • No smoking outside of designated locations
  • No off-road driving
  • All vehicles should have a shovel and water or a fire extinguisher

Note that all year long, fireworks, sky lanterns, tracer rounds and exploding targets are prohibited on state-managed forestland.
