Ashland Resident Casey Roland And Plant Oregon Of Talent Get Statewide Honor For Their Zeal For Trees (Photo) - 04/03/18

ASHLAND, Ore. — The Oregon Department of Forestry, in partnership with Oregon Community Trees, is recognizing an Ashland arborist and a Talent nursery for their dedication to urban trees.  Casey Roland, owner of Casey P. Roland Tree Care of Ashland, and the Plant Oregon nursery in Talent are among four recipients of the 2018 Oregon Urban and Community Forestry Award. The others are:

  • Mary Harrell with Friends of Trees in Portland
  • Paul Hennon with the City of Tualatin

In addition, Lake Oswego was named Oregon Tree City of the Year and City of Corvallis Urban Forester Jon Pywell received the President’s Award.

Kristin Ramstad is Urban and Community Assistance Forestry Program manager with the Oregon Department of Forestry. She said Roland is a past tree commissioner for Ashland who earned the award for his tireless efforts to help people avoid removing healthy trees over maintenance issues. “Time and again Roland, who is a professional arborist, has volunteered his own time or money for people who lack the funds to plant or maintain a tree.”

Ramstad likens Roland to the Lorax character who speaks for the trees in the Dr. Seuss book of the same name.  “Reportedly he once told a homeowner who was thinking of cutting down a tree to avoid having to rake leaves, ‘If it’s the mess you’re worried about, I will rake up those leaves for the rest of my life to save that tree’.”

For more than 30 years, Dave and Dan Bish of Plant Oregon have been providing trees for Oregonians to plant. Through their nursery in Talent they have donated since 2014 over $50,000 worth of plants (mostly native trees) to be planted in Ashland’s urban forest. This includes trees donated to Southern Oregon University. The donations helped SOU win and maintain its status as a Tree Campus USA.

Mike Oxendine, superintendent of SOU’s  landscaping, equipment and motor pool said, “Dave and Dan and the whole team at Plant Oregon are committed to helping Oregon have healthy and thriving urban trees. We’re grateful for their generous support of our campus arboretum and of the citywide Ashland forest.”

Oregon Community Trees promotes healthy urban and community forests. The organization assists community groups, local governments and schools throughout the state with expertise and grants that support leadership, education, awareness and advocacy for urban and community forestry. Each year the organization recognizes individuals and organizations for inspiring tree planting and care, engaging citizens, and raising awareness about urban trees and forests and the need to protect them.
