Oregon City receives grant from Oregon Community Trees for Arbor Week event - 03/15/18

OREGON CITY, Ore. -- Oregon City has received a grant from the non-profit Oregon Community Trees to help with its Arbor Week celebration Saturday, April 7. The event at the historic McLoughlin Promenade will be from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will help plant trees, shrubs and flowers in the park. People volunteering to plant will receive a t-shirt purchased using the grant funds. Educational materials promoting healthy urban forestry will also be available.

Numerous groups are partnering with the City for this event, including a local neighborhood association, 4H, Boy Scouts, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1324, Friends of Trees and the Clackamas Soil and Water Conservation District. Featured speaker at the event is ISA Certified Arborist Brian French of Arboriculture Internationa, who will speak about Oregon white oaks. Two of those long-lived native trees will be planted along the McLoughlin Promenade.

Oregon City Parks and Cemetery Maintenance Manager Jonathan Waverly said, "The City of Oregon City is excited to receive the grant. We'll be using the funds to help us promote and educate folks about trees in our community."

Oregon Community Trees promotes healthy urban and community forests. The organization assists community groups, local governments and schools throughout the state with expertise and grants that support leadership, education, awareness and advocacy for urban and community forestry. One criteria for receiving an Arbor Week grant is being a Tree City USA, a status Oregon City has held for six years.
