Update: Procession Announced For The Memorial Service For Oregon State Police Sergeant John Burright (Photo) - 08/23/21
An emergency vehicle procession in honor of Oregon State Police Sergeant John Burright is scheduled to begin Wednesday, August 25, 2021, at 10:20 a.m. The procession will be starting at the Linn County Fairgrounds, located at 3700 Knox Butte Rd E in Albany. Members of the public are not allowed to participate in the procession but are welcome to view the procession from sidewalks and overpasses along the route.
The procession is expected to include a large number of public safety vehicles. The attached map is the exact route of the procession from the Linn County Fairgrounds past the Oregon State Police Albany Patrol Office, where Sgt. Burright spent most of his career. The procession then continues north on Interstate 5 to the Salem Armory for the memorial service.
During the procession, area travelers should be prepared for road closures, traffic congestion, and long delays along the route, especially on I-5 between Albany and Salem.
If you are planning on driving in these areas between the hours of 10:00 a.m. through 12:00 p.m. we encourage you to take an alternative route or delay traveling until the events have ended.
Members of the public attending the memorial service at the Salem Armory are encouraged to carpool, walk, or ride a bicycle. Public parking is available but limited (please refer to the attached map).
All media outlets must notify OSP if they plan to cover the service. If multiple media outlets wish to film the actual memorial service inside the armory auditorium, we ask those outlets to coordinate a pool camera. All media attending MUST be in place no later than 11:00 a.m. Any questions regarding the service should be directed to the Oregon State Police PIO email account at osppio@osp.oregon.gov. Further directions to the media will be emailed out to those outlets that have responded to OSP on August 24, 2021.
If members of the public wish to donate to support the Burright family, they may do so through the Oregon Fallen Badge Foundation. Donations may be made in person at any US Bank location or online through the “support us” tab on the Foundation’s website at www.oregonfallenbadge.com. All donations collected by the Foundation during this time will be given to the Burright family.

The Memorial Service for Oregon State Police Sergeant John Burright will be held on August 25, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. at the Salem Armory 2310 17th St. NE, Salem, Oregon 97303. The service is open to the public.
Sergeant Burright passed away on May 4, 2021, after a nearly 20-year battle after a tragic traffic incident left him with debilitating and career-ending injuries. His injuries were suffered on September 4, 2001, when he was struck at the side of Interstate 5 while assisting a disabled motorist. The incident instantly claimed the lives of Sr. Trooper Maria Mignano and Albany Police Department Officer Jason Hoerauf.
An emergency vehicle procession from Albany to the Salem Armory will precede the service.
The family requests their privacy be respected and does not wish to provide statements to the media at this time.
For planning purposes, we are inquiring of media outlets to notify us if they plan to cover the service. If multiple media outlets wish to report on the service, we ask those outlets to coordinate a pool camera.
