Free First Day Hikes At Tryon Creek State Natural Area Jan. 1, 2026 - 12/18/25

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) is hosting five free guided hikes at Tryon Creek State Natural Area on New Year’s Day, Thursday, Jan. 1.

 

It's part of the annual First Day Hikes in partnership with America’s State Parks to offer free guided hikes in state parks across Oregon on New Year’s Day.

 

Information about the hikes hosted at Tryon Creek State Natural Area is below:

  • Join our forest exploration hikes. Choose from 5 hikes of varying lengths. All hikes 2 miles and longer will traverse natural surface trails with root heaves and have moderate elevation gain. 
    • 9 a.m. — 5-mile hike over varying terrain and difficulty levels, relatively fast-paced on rustic and minimally maintained trails. This will be an exercise hike.
    • 9:30 a.m. — 4-mile hike along multiple trails and varying terrain.
    • 10 a.m. — 3-mile hike along multiple trails and varying terrain. 
    • 10:30 a.m. — 2-mile hike along multiple trails and varying terrain.
    • 11 a.m. — .25-mile hike on the fully-paved Trillium trail. No elevation gain but occasional root heave.
  • Meet at the Friends Circle in front of the Nature Center for all hikes, 11321 S Terwilliger Blvd., Portland. Parking is limited at Tryon Creek. Please plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your hike to allow time for parking.
  • Friendly dogs are welcome on six-foot leashes. 
  • Participants should dress in layers, wear sturdy shoes appropriate for rain and bring water and snacks.

All activities are free, but a day-use parking permit is required. Permits cost $10 per day for Oregon Residents or $12 for non-residents; annual permits are also sold at the park.
