News Release

TODAY: Physicians And Advanced Practice Providers Rally On Labor Day To Demand Fair Contracts And Patient-Centered Care (Photo) - 09/01/25

Northwest Medicine United (NWMU)
Portland, OR
– On Labor Day, physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants represented by Northwest Medicine United (NWMU) will rally outside Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center, joined by nurses, therapists, technicians, and other healthcare workers in solidarity. The rally will spotlight the pressures facing frontline caregivers and the urgent need for fair contracts that protect both workers and patients.

Over 200 hospitalists across the Legacy Health system have been bargaining for more than 18 months without a contract. But this rally goes beyond a single negotiation, it’s about the future of healthcare delivery in Oregon and across the country.

“Healthcare workers are under immense pressure,” said Mikeanne Minter, MD, a Legacy physician of 25 years. “We’re not asking for luxury. We’re asking to be able to do our jobs without constantly choosing between what’s right for our patients and what the spreadsheet says we can afford to do.”

The rally will highlight how short staffing, rising workloads, and profit-driven decision-making threaten the fragile connection between patients and their caregivers. Speakers will emphasize that when physicians and advanced practice providers organize, they do so not only to secure fair working conditions but also to protect the space where genuine healing can still happen.

NWMU members are calling on Legacy Health to settle fair contracts that allow safe staffing levels, reduce burnout, and ensure medical decisions are guided by those trained to provide care, not by corporate profit margins.

The Labor Day rally underscores that supporting healthcare workers means supporting the patients and families who depend on them every day.
