Robot Revolution explores how robots, created by human ingenuity, will ultimately be our companions and colleagues, changing how we play, live and work together. The exhibit comes to life with a collection of cutting-edge robots secured from some of the most innovative global robotics companies and universities. Guests have extraordinary opportunities to interact with robots that have rarely been shown to the public before. Learn more.

Special Events

Tara Expedition Boat Tours and Activities
July 8, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
For over 15 years the Tara Expedition has been constantly on the move and has traveled nearly 200,000 miles across all the world’s oceans. Weighing in at 120 tons, this 118-foot long schooner has embarked on 11 expeditions from the Arctic to Australia studying the impacts of climate change and the ecological crisis on the ocean.

Negative Space

Belgian artist and researcher Anouk De Clercq brings a selection of her digital moving-image work—often minimal and accompanied by precise electronic soundtracks—to one of the biggest screens in Portland.
 
OMSI’s Harvest Festival
September 30, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., in OMSI’s Bridge Lot
Enjoy the bounty of Oregon while indulging in snacks, sweets, beer and produce from the Pacific Northwest region! Learn about Oregon specialty crops with over 40 vendors from local farms, CSA’s, cooking demonstrations and artisan vendors. There’s fun for the whole family, including kid’s activities, llamas, construction equipment, a beer tent and live entertainment on the stage. Come celebrate the harvest season at OMSI!

OMSI After Dark
Enjoy child-free, brain-building science fun featuring live demos, new exhibitions and old favorites! Guests can indulge in tasty snacks, sweets and beer and wine from regional food and beverage artisans. 21+ only, IDs required. OMSI After Dark is typically held on the last Wednesday of every month. Special tasting editions may be held on different days of the week.

Stranger than (Science) Fiction

Science is brewing at the 8th annual OMSI After Dark: Brewfest. Don't just drink beer, learn beer! At our 8th annual brewfest, sample beers from local breweries while learning how beer is made, the variety of hops and enjoy some fun beer tricks while you're at it!

OMSI Science Pub
Science Pub is a monthly event held in multiple locations throughout the state and is open to all ages. No scientific background is required. Just bring your curiosity, sense of humor, and appetite for food, drinks and knowledge!

Kendall Concerts
Kendall Concerts: Music Under the Dome is a monthly planetarium concert series combining live performances with stunning visuals in riots of color, shape and movement, enveloping the audience into an adventure of the senses without ever having to leave their seat.

Mondegreen are a dream pop / moon-rock band that formed in Portland, Oregon in 2015. The band consists of Ash Dybvig (Theda) on vocals, guitar, and flute with partner Dustin Dybvig (Brass Clouds, Horse Feathers) on drums, keys, and bass.

Kendall Concerts Presents Wooden Sleepers

Wooden Sleepers is a Portland folk-grass band featuring Nolan Gordin, Nik Kemmer, Phil Krug, and Carl LaRue. Rooted in traditional folk and bluegrass, their music blends these influences with those of americana, blues, and soul to offer tunes with deep grooves and creativity.

Cider Making Workshop
July 21, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. & 2-4 p.m.
Cider drinking is a lost American tradition, recapture it here and learn how to make your own! Participants will explore the history and science of cider, as well as learn the steps to turning a half gallon of apple juice from the store into delicious hard cider to drink at home

Soap Making
July 8, July 28, August 12, September 9, September 22; 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Make soap from scratch to take home while learning about the awesome chemistry of soap molecules! Participants will explore soap science with hands-on activities, then put their knowledge to work as they craft a unique batch of cold process soap.

Fermentation & Microbiome
September 8, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
In this class you will create a batch of kraut to take home, as well as learn the basics of making your own sourdough starter and kombucha SCOBY.  You will also get an introduction to your microbiome, and learn about new scientific discoveries on the depth and breadth of how our microbiome influences our health. 

$2 Days
Explore the museum’s permanent exhibits and labs for just $2 per person on the first Sunday of every month! Submarine Tours, Theater and Planetarium shows are also reduced to $5 per person, or less with applicable discounts.

The Empirical Theater at OMSI
Named for knowledge gained through observation, the Empirical Theater emphasizes programming that engages and entertains visitors on educational, scientific and cultural topics. With a four-story screen, Dolby Atmos sound system and 3D capability, the theater is expanding the tradition of offering the latest in high-quality, informative and entertaining films for all ages.

Amazon Adventure
The epic, true story of explorer Henry Bates' fascinating 11-year journey through the visually stunning and biodiverse Amazon rainforest as a young man who risks his life for science in the 1850’s.
As in any great detective story, audiences will experience the compelling clues Bates unearths in his major discovery of the phenomenon of mimicry, whereby certain animals adopt the look of others that helps them deceive predators and gain an advantage to survive.

Dinosaurs Alive 
Dinosaurs Alive is a global adventure of science and discovery featuring the earliest dinosaurs of the Triassic Period to the monsters of the Cretaceous "reincarnated" life-sized for the giant screen. Audiences will journey with some of the world's preeminent paleontologists as they uncover evidence that the descendants of dinosaurs still walk (or fly) among us.

Dream Big: Engineering Our World

Presented by BBC Earth, Oceans: Our Blue Planet takes audiences on a global odyssey to explore the largest and least explored habitat on earth. New ocean science and technology has allowed us to go further into the unknown than we ever thought possible.

Robots
There are millions of astonishing robots in existence today and innovators are taking robotics to the next level with the latest generation of these awe-inspiring machines: humanoid robots that can work like us, play like us, learn, and even look like us. In this immersive giant-screen film experience from National Geographic Studios, audiences get an inside look at just how hard it is to mimic what we humans can do, as well as what it means to be humanoid.

The universe is a curious place—more so than we ever imagined.  As scientists unravel the complexities of the cosmos, key findings are revealing amazing new frontiers for exploration. Come along on a journey about what we already know—and about the mysteries we have yet to solve—in Dark Universe.  With astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson as your guide, go beyond the night sky and into deep space to find out how discoveries over the past 100 years have led us to two great cosmic mysteries: dark matter and dark energy. You’ll hurtle through Jupiter’s atmosphere, peer at the web of dark matter holding galaxies together, and watch the colorful remains of the universe’s beginnings unfold.

One World, One Sky: Big Bird's Adventure
NEW! Join Big Bird and Elmo as they explore the night sky with Hu Hu Zhu, a Muppet from "Zhima Jie," the Chinese co-production of Sesame Street. Together they take an imaginary trip from Sesame Street to the moon, where they discover how different it is from Earth. They also journey to Zhima Jie to learn about the similarities in our view of the sky.
  
Starry Nights LIVE!
Learn about the interesting stories of the constellations and others in this live presentation in OMSI’s Kendall Planetarium. It is not just stars in the night sky—planets, constellations, zodiac, shooting stars, and satellites are all there if you know when and where to look. Navigate by the stars and discover how you can become a backyard astronomer. Topics will change monthly and graphics will be programmed accordingly. All shows are hosted and narrated live by OMSI planetarium staff.

Imagine the ultimate space vacation! Discover our solar system through a new set of eyes – a family from another star system seeking the perfect vacation spot. Fly over the surface of Pluto, our best-known Dwarf Planet. Dive over the ice cliffs of Miranda. Sail through the rings of Saturn. Feel the lightning storms of Jupiter. Star Party
Join us as we gaze at the heavens from Rooster Rock State Park and Stub Stewart State Park starting at sunset. 
Rooster Rock State Park is located 22 miles east of Portland on I-84 just east of the Sandy River at exit 25.
L.L. "Stub" Stewart State Park, take US-26 west of Portland and turn right on OR-47.

The party is free with $5 parking per vehicle parking fee. From beginners to experts of all ages, here's your opportunity to view the stars and other objects through a variety of telescopes. Warm clothing and a flashlight with red light are recommended. Personal telescopes and binoculars are welcome.
