Tualatin Lion Flags For 1st Graders -- Begins A Return To Normal - 05/27/21

During the first week of June, 2021, the members of the Tualatin Lions Club will deliver Flags for First Graders to the three public elementary schools in Tualatin. This is a long established service for the Tualatin Lions and for Lions Clubs across America. What is a little different this year is that in Tualatin, Second Graders will receive their small US flags as well, because the pandemic interrupted the project last year.

This is a hopeful beginning to a return to normal for students and families and a reminder that the school year is almost over. It is also a lesson for students in US history and the story of the US flag.

First and Second Grade students at Bridgeport, Byrom and Tualatin Elementary Schools will receive their flags and coloring brochures from their teachers and school staffs instead of local Lions Club members this year due to continuing Covid-19 restrictions. The staffs of these Tigard-Tualatin School District schools were very excited to schedule the deliveries and to help their students feel like things are “returning to normal”.

The Tualatin Lions were excited to be able to safely get together to cut, drill and finish the small wooden bases for the students’ flags and to place the Tualatin Lions sticker on the base. They also enjoyed the camaraderie of sitting around a table and folding 600 coloring brochures. The Lions usually deliver the flags to students personally in first grade assemblies, teaching a little about the flag and frequently enjoying the students singing patriotic songs. The Tualatin Lions look forward to returning to this tradition in future years.
