Oregon Historical Society Family Day Program Celebrates Local Immigrant Communities (Photo) - 12/14/18

Portland, OR – Join the Oregon Historical Society for its last Family Day event of 2018 this Saturday, December 15. This free all-ages event features cultural performances and activities by local immigrant community groups.

At 12pm enjoy Vietnamese Christmas carols sung by the Abba Choir from Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Experience the beauty, elegance, and spirit of the Vietnamese ?'àn tranh, an ancient instrument played by the internationally recognized Huong Viet Performing Arts Group

At 1:15pm, watch traditional Iraqi dances performed by members of the Iraqi Society of Oregon. Tap your feet as you watch the "Jobiya", a popular line dance that is an essential part of Iraqi celebrations.

At 3:15pm, learn about the pastoral lifestyle of the Borana people from Northern Kenya through the songs and dances of the Sabbo Gonna Sisters. In the Borana culture, songs focus on praise for livestock, especially cows and goats.

Throughout the day, members of the Bosniaks Educational & Cultural Organization will teach visitors about their culture through artifacts and photos. Those who visit early may have the pleasure of sampling homemade Bosnian delicacies!

Throughout the day, take a break at the craft table to make tissue paper stained glass suncatchers; dragon, cow, and goat hand puppets; and sponge-patterned gift bags.

Plus – Santa will be landing his sleigh in our Santaland display from 12pm – 4pm! Stop by for a photograph and view beloved pieces from the iconic Meier & Frank Santaland.

Family Day takes place from 12pm – 4pm at the Oregon Historical Society (1200 SW Park Avenue, Portland) and is free and open to the public.

About the Oregon Historical Society

For more than a century, the Oregon Historical Society has served as the state’s collective memory, preserving a vast collection of artifacts, photographs, maps, manuscript materials, books, films, and oral histories. Our research library, museum, digital platforms & website (www.ohs.org), educational programming, and historical journal make Oregon’s history open and accessible to all. We exist because history is powerful, and because a history as deep and rich as Oregon’s cannot be contained within a single story or point of view.
