Oregon Historical Society Hosts Americana-Bluegrass Quartet True North for Free Summer Concert August 16 (Photo) - 08/14/18

Portland, OR – There is no better way to enjoy the dog days of summer than by listening to some cool Americana tunes! The Oregon Historical Society is excited to collaborate with bluegrass quartet, True North, to host a free summer concert right in the middle of Portland’s South Park Blocks. This free, family-friendly concert will begin at 5pm on the Oregon Historical Society’s outdoor plaza (1200 SW Park Avenue).

Americana quartet True North is emerging as a Pacific Northwest powerhouse of intelligent, memorable songs, and lush instrumental and vocal performances, with the crazy-good picking and harmonies of a band deeply rooted in traditional folk and bluegrass genres.

Fronted by award-winning singer-songwriters Kristen Grainger and Dan Wetzel, True North is rounded out with two Pacific Northwest bluegrass superstars Martin Stevens and Josh Adkins. Grainger is making a name for herself in songcraft, collecting accolades and awards at Wilflower! Arts and Music Festival, IMEA, Telluride, Merlefest, and Kerrville songwriting competitions.

The band’s newest project, Open Road, Broken Heart, after receiving great reviews, debuted at number 1 on the Folk DJ Charts for national radio airplay and has continued to stay in the top fifteen for the past six months on the Roots Music Report. Their 2014 release, Elsebound, received very favorable reviews from music critics here and abroad, spent 25 weeks on the Roots Music Report’s top ten (national folk charts) and was the number 7 folk album of the year.

On stage, True North exemplifies the most compelling aspects of live acoustic roots music: storied songwriting, mad instrumental skills, and vocals that alternately bring you to tears or raise ecstatic hairs on the back of your neck.

About the Oregon Historical Society

For more than a century, the Oregon Historical Society has served as the state’s collective memory, preserving a vast collection of artifacts, photographs, maps, manuscript materials, books, films, and oral histories. Our research library, museum, digital platforms & website (www.ohs.org), educational programming, and historical journal make Oregon’s history open and accessible to all. We exist because history is powerful, and because a history as deep and rich as Oregon’s cannot be contained within a single story or point of view.
