Oregon City School District Names Interim Superintendent For 2021-22 (Photo) -06/02/21

Oregon City, OR – The Oregon City School Board of Directors has selected Kyle Laier, assistant superintendent of the Oregon City School District, as the interim superintendent, effective July 1. The appointment was announced at the board’s special session held on June 1.

Laier was selected and approved as assistant superintendent in 2018-2019, in part to establish a superintendent succession plan. Appointing the Assistant Superintendent as the interim superintendent for the 2021-22 school year will provide stability for the continued operation of the district and give adequate time for the Board of Directors to determine and complete a thorough search process for a permanent replacement to begin July 2, 2022.

Laier has spent most of his career with Oregon City schools, including the last three years as assistant superintendent. He succeeds Larry Didway, who has accepted a position as the superintendent of Clackamas Education Service District. The Oregon City School Board appointed Laier as the interim superintendent in a special session on June 2.

“Kyle is a visionary leader, he has led the effort to transform our middle schools through the bond process. He has worked with the community to create learning environments that meet the social-emotional needs of middle schoolers as well as increase the academic rigor through design thinking and inquiry-based learning,” said Martha Spiers chair of the OCSD Board of Directors. “His commitment to and knowledge of the Oregon City community will allow us to  provide unwavering service to our families and students as we navigate a year of transition.”

“I am honored and humbled to be appointed by the school board to continue my service to the Oregon City community as the interim superintendent for the 2021-22 school year,” said Laier.  “Additional student support services funded by the Student Investment Account, new innovative spaces providing increased learning opportunities funded by the 2018 bond, increased diversity among our school leaders, and lessons learned from the challenges of the past year have us lined up for a great return to school this fall.”

Laier began his career in Oregon City, in 2003, at Ogden Middle School, where he taught social studies. He went on to become the principal at King Elementary School. He then took the helm at CAIS, providing a vision of innovation and community partnership.  He left Oregon City for a short period of time to be the principal at Newberg High School and returned to Oregon City s as the assistant superintendent in 2018.

Laier holds an M.S. in education from the University of Portland, where he also earned his B.S. in secondary education. In addition, he holds an administrative credential from Lewis & Clark College.
