Aviva Health's Capital Campaign Off to Fast Start with $100,000 Contribution from Oregon Community Foundation - 05/24/21

ROSEBURG, Ore. – Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) announced a $100,000 grant supporting Aviva Health’s latest building project, a two-story, 31,000-sq.-ft. clinic on its main Roseburg campus that will add 34 new exam rooms and house the organization’s Roseburg Family Medicine Residency Program.

The award comes on the heels of the Douglas County based Federally Qualified Health Center’s groundbreaking, held virtually last week.

“Aviva’s Family Medicine Residency program addresses one of the root causes of insufficient rural health care—the lack of primary care physicians. Oregon Community Foundation is proud to invest in the clinic expansion necessary to bring the residency program to its full complement of 24 doctors,” said OCF Senior Program Officer John Moriarty. “We believe this will help create a sustainable professional health care workforce for Aviva Health as well as health care organizations throughout Douglas County and beyond.”

Construction will be completed in May 2022, one month before Aviva Health welcomes its third cohort of eight family medicine doctors to its residency, bringing the total number of residents training in the program to 24.

A federally recognized health care provider shortage area, Douglas County has struggled to recruit and retain qualified physicians. Research indicates 50 percent of all family medicine residents practice within 100 miles of where they completed their training, a data point that was a major driver in Aviva Health’s decision to start its residency program.

“Aviva Health is extremely humbled by OCF’s generous investment in our new building project,” says KC Bolton, CEO of Aviva Health. “Receiving this level of support from such a well-respected, Oregon-based foundation is a testament to the importance of our project and yet another example of OCF’s unwavering commitment to our local community.

This isn’t the first time OCF has stepped up to support to Aviva Health. The foundation also contributed $50,000 to the capital campaign supporting the construction of Aviva Health’s existing Roseburg facility. Most recently, OCF awarded Aviva Health $40,000 for its COVID-19 response efforts, which included operating the very first mass COVID-19 vaccination event at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

In addition to providing ample space for the residency program, the building will also greatly improve access to health care services for people living in the area. Parts of Douglas County consistently rank near the top of Oregon Health Authority’s list of areas of highest unmet health care need. Aviva Health estimates it will have the capacity to serve an additional 3,300 unduplicated patients totaling 10,000 patient visits once the facility opens.

ABOUT OREGON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

Oregon Community Foundation puts donated money to work in Oregon — more than $100 million in grants and scholarships annually. Since 1973, OCF grantmaking, research, advocacy and community-advised solutions have helped individuals, families, businesses, and organizations create charitable funds to improve lives for all Oregonians. Impactful giving — time, talent, and resources from many generous Oregonians — creates measurable change. Throughout 2020, OCF responded quickly and urgently — distributing a record-setting $220 million in charitable dollars to more than 3,000 nonprofits throughout Oregon working to address urgent needs, stabilize communities and prepare for long-term recovery in Oregon. OCF donors responded to the magnitude of need, as reflected in a 44% increase in donor advised fund grantmaking from the previous year. For more information, please visit oregoncf.org.
