Hillsboro – Sharif Zakir Liwaru has been named as the director of Equity and Family Partnerships for Northwest Regional Education Service District (ESD). He has nearly 30 years of professional experience in equity roles, including most recently as the regional director of equity initiatives and partnerships for the Cascade Alliance for Equity

Liwaru replaces outgoing Equity Director Marisol Jiménez, who has served with distinction at Northwest Regional ESD for 14 years, and who will retire in June.

“In his role leading the Cascade Alliance for Equity, Liwaru has demonstrated an outstanding aptitude for advancing regional equity initiatives,” says Superintendent Dan Goldman. “We’re grateful he will be deepening this work with the dedicated team at NWRESD across the northwest region of the state.”

In his new role, Liwaru will coordinate professional development for educators and advise on strategic actions to expand opportunities and improve outcomes for historically marginalized students.

“Our public education system unjustly and systematically underserves many of the students and families we promise to support. We must do better,” says Sharif Zakir Liwaru. “I look forward to working with educators to deepen partnerships with the diverse communities we serve.”

Liwaru had previously served as Omaha Public Schools’ equity and diversity director, University of Nebraska’s attendance collaborative director, and as the president of the Malcolm X Memorial Foundation. He holds a Master of Public Administration for Nonprofit Management and a Bachelor of Arts in Black Studies from the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

Northwest Regional Education Service District is the largest of Oregon’s 19 education service districts. It serves 20 school districts in Clatsop, Columbia, Tillamook and Washington counties. These school districts serve nearly 104,000 students. Through state funding, contracts, and private and public grants, the agency provides a wide range of specialized services to educators and their students. Services include early intervention and early childhood special education; K-12 special education; equity training; instructional and school improvement programs for students, educators, child care providers and community members; professional learning networks made up of educators and students that focus on 9th grade success, early learning and school culture and climate; outdoor school; dual-credit, GED and online educational options; and technology, administrative and business services.
