OLYMPIA, WA. --Sen. Sharon Nelson (D-Dist. 34) has received the prestigious 2018 Community Impact Award from Washington's credit unions.

The Community Impact Award recognizes Washington legislators who understand the important role credit unions play in the community, and the not-for-profit, cooperative financial services choice they provide to 3.6 million Washington members. The honor was presented at the Northwest Credit Union Association's (NWCUA) recent Credit Union Day at the Capitol in Olympia. More than 200 credit union professionals were on hand to see Sen. Nelson accept the honor.

"Credit unions are a vital part of our state's economy, and widely trusted by Washingtonians," said Sen. Nelson. "As a former banker, I understand the necessity of having financial institutions that are part of our local communities and operate with local interests in mind. I'm proud to be seen as an advocate for this type of banking."
Washington's 89 credit unions serve nearly half the state's population. With no Wall St. stockholders to pay, credit unions reinvest in their members in the form of dividends, lower loan rates, and better returns on savings. Last year, Washington credit unions returned $369 million in direct benefits to their members.

"Senator Nelson's priorities in the legislature are always focused on the people she serves," said Paula Sardinas, NWCUA's vice president of legislative affairs for Washington. "Two great examples are the work she did to protect consumers from predatory, payday lending practices, and fighting to remove cancer-causing chemicals from children's and household goods. She's playing a crucial role in advancing the Credit Union Movement and securing the industry's future so that members today, and in generations to come, can continue to have the choice to join a local credit union and experience the difference."

Sen. Nelson was elected in 2010 and is Majority Leader of the Washington State Senate. She is a resident of Maury Island, WA.

The Northwest Credit Union Association is the not-for-profit trade association representing over 180 credit unions in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, and their 6.5 million consumer members. Northwest Credit unions are not-for-profit cooperatives, owned by their members. Credit unions help members achieve their financial goals. All earnings in excess of operating expenses and required reserves are returned to members in the form of lower loan rates, fewer fees and higher interest paid on savings.
