Structure Fire/ Deceased Person - 11/06/18

******UPDATE******

On November 2, 2018, at 4:43 AM, Newport Fire responded to 445 NE 8th regarding a structure fire.  During a preliminary search of the residence, fire personnel located a deceased male inside the residence.

Newport Police Investigators responded to the scene.  Once the fire was suppressed, Newport Investigators worked with members of the Fire Arson Response Team, which is made up of representatives from Lincoln County Law Enforcement, Lincoln County Fire Agencies, Oregon State Police, and the State Fire Marshall’s Office.

The deceased male was identified as Mathew Hogue Lee, 42, a resident at the location.  Investigators confirmed that Lee intentionally set a fire in the residence.  The fire was contained mainly to one room within the residence.  The remainder of the home was severely damaged by heat and smoke from the fire.  Lee’s cause of death was due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On November 2, 2018, at 4:43 am, the Newport Fire Department was dispatched to 445 NE 8th St. regarding a structure fire.  A neighbor reported seeing smoke coming from the residence.  Newport Fire arrived on scene and confirmed the single story residence had visible smoke coming from the roof.  Fire personnel knocked down the fire and began search efforts inside the residence. Newport Fire was assisted by Seal Rock, Depoe Bay and Toledo Fire Departments.  

Fire personnel located a deceased male inside the residence.  No other persons were located in the residence.  Once the fire was under control and the scene safe, Newport Police and arson investigators began working to identify the deceased male and the cause of the fire.  The fire remains under investigation.
