News Release
Criminal Impersonation of a Peace Officer - 12/04/17

At approximately 11:05pm on December 3rd, 2017, Newport Police Department was alerted to a person impersonating an officer in the South Beach area. The victim notified police they had been driving southbound near SW 116th St., when they were stopped an unmarked vehicle. The vehicle was equipped with red and white flashing lights in the windshield and a spotlight near the area of the driver side door.

The victim stated a male subject approached her vehicle and shined a flashlight in her face. The victim, believing they had pulled over by police, produced standard required documentation and handed them to the suspect. The suspect asked the victims where they were headed. When the victim answered, the suspect became rude.

The suspect went to his car, and the victim used her cell phone to call a friend. When the suspect returned, the victim asked the suspect his name. The suspect responded by grabbing the victim's phone and throwing it back inside her vehicle along with her documentation. The suspect returned to his vehicle, made a U-Turn, and sped away northbound.

No suspect description is available.

Newport Police are asking for assistance in locating the suspect. If you observed the stop, or have any information, please contact Officer Jon Humphreys at 541-574-3348.
