News Release
NCSD Announces High School Naming Community Forums - 02/05/19

North Clackamas Schools (NCSD) will be converting Rock Creek Middle School into a fourth neighborhood high school using voter-approved 2016 Capital Construction Bond funds. This new high school does not yet have a name.

In late 2017, NCSD’s Board of Directors formed a School Naming Committee to provide them with suggested names for the high school, along with the now-named Beatrice Morrow Cannady Elementary School. This school naming process included several opportunities for the public to submit their ideas and comments. The process concluded in May 2018 when the School Board decided to not select any of the committee's suggested high school names, and delayed further action on this matter until now.

In order to begin bringing the high school naming process to a close, NCSD’s Board of Directors will hold two School Naming Community Engagement Forums in February, so that community members can discuss the matter of the high school name.

The forums’ details are below:

February 21: 6:45pm - 8:45pm, Alder Creek Middle School Media Center; 13801 SE Webster, Milwaukie, OR 97267

February 27: 6:30pm - 8:30pm, Clackamas High School Media Center; 14486 SE 122nd Ave, Clackamas, OR 97015

During last year’s process, there were strong opinions about the committee's suggested names. Additionally, the exercise brought to light important and difficult topics, such as race, class, historical exclusion, definitions of place, and community identity.

These forums will be designed to facilitate conversations among attendees. Participants should attend with a willingness to contribute respectfully, listen authentically, and recognize the different opinions that are a part of the high school naming process.

NCSD’s Board of Directors will attend both events and incorporate the conversations as they decide the high school’s name. It is anticipated the Board of Directors will discuss high school naming during the March 14 board meeting, and take action at the April 11 board meeting.

Childcare will be provided, and for those who cannot attend in person, NCSD will provide updates on its website. Additionally, comments can be sent electronically to NCSD via a form on its website, which will be available starting February 21.
