North Clackamas Schools Seeking Names for Two Schools - 12/12/17

Community Input Sought for new Elementary & High School

Resulting from the passage of the $433M capital construction bond in 2016, North Clackamas Schools (NCSD) will be constructing a new elementary school, and creating a fourth comprehensive High School. Both of these schools will need names, and NCSD is seeking suggestions from the community.

NCSD has created an advisory committee consisting of community members, students, staff, and an historian, to consider the suggested names. The School Board decided the potential names should be related to a geographic location, an historic event, or a local, state, national or international person, who has made a contribution to humanity. Additionally, if the committee advances the name of an individual, the School Board has encouraged the committee to consider women, people of color, or members of other historically underrepresented groups.

In addition to helping NCSD usher in a new era of growth, "The opportunity to name two new schools in this district provides a chance for me and my children to learn more about the people, places, and events that make this district special. I'm particularly eager for my children to learn about the contributions made by people whose voices are not often heard often enough," said Kristin Lunceford, Duncan Elementary School parent and Member, School Naming Committee.

The period to suggest new names begins December 11, and ends January 23, 2018. Suggested names can be submitted electronically at www.nclack.k12.or.us/new-school-naming, or in person at any NCSD school, or at the District Office at 12400 SE Freeman Way, Milwaukie, OR 97222.
