PORTLAND AREA MAN SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS PRISON FOR KILLING GOOD SAMARATIN

Portland, OR- Arvoni Alexander Hayes, 25 years old, was sentenced to 18 years in prison today along with three years of post-prison supervision for the killing of Aaron McInnis on July 14, 2024.
Hayes pleaded guilty to Manslaughter in the First Degree and Unlawful Use of a Weapon with a Firearm.
Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Eric Palmer prosecuted the case for the state. After the sentencing he said: “Aaron McInnis was a hero to the very end. He did not hesitate to check on the safety of a stranger and tragically lost his life to the defendant’s cowardly shooting. Today, we honor the hero and send the defendant to prison.”
The District Attorney’s Office would like to thank Detective Shaye Samora and all other members of the Portland Police Bureau Homicide Detail for their outstanding work on this case.
The DA’s Office would also like to highlight the work of the MCDA Victim Advocates who provide care and comfort to crime victim families and loved ones.
THE FACTS:
On July 14, 2024 Aaron McInnis was dropping off a friend at her home near Normandale Park in Northeast Portland.
A man asked Mr. McInnis for help checking on a woman he had heard crying in a nearby car.
The two men went over to see if she was okay.
The defendant was inside with the woman, his girlfriend. The defendant stepped out of the car naked and eventually agreed to leave his girlfriend alone. The defendant slowly dressed himself. Suddenly, he dove back into the car and yelled at the woman in the car to drive the two of them away. Mr. McInnis ran after the car as it sped away. At a nearby intersection, the defendant got out and began firing a gun at the victim. Mr. McInnis was hit three times and passed away at OHSU.
