News Release

PORTLAND AREA MAN SENTENCED TO 30 YEARS PRISON FOR STALKING AND KILLING HOMELESS STRANGER THEN LATER TRYING TO KILL SECOND HOMELESS STRANGER - 04/01/26

CASE: 24CR19333

Portland, OR- Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Christopher Marshall on March 31, 2026, sentenced 22-year-old Antony Kassab to 30 years in prison for tracking and killing a homeless stranger in Gresham then later tracking and trying to kill another homeless man he also did not know. .

Kassab pled guilty to First Degree Manslaughter in the murder of Cody Funk. He also pled guilty to Attempted Murder in the Second Degree for an attack on David McQuown.

Multnomah County Senior Deputy District Attorney Sean Hughey prosecuted the case for the state. After the sentencing he said:

“Cody Funk and David McQuown were both subjected to an unprovoked attack by a complete stranger.  Cody Funk left behind a family who loved him, and while this sentence can provide some measure of accountability, no sentence can fill the void caused by this senseless killing.”

The District Attorney’s Office would like to thank Gresham Police Detectives Justin Pick and Mark Hawley for their outstanding investigation that led to the conviction of the defendant.

We would also like to highlight the work of MCDA Victim Advocates Alie Aguilera and Alex Bidwell for the care and compassion they showed the victim families in this case.

The Facts:

On December 26, 2023 Kassab stabbed Cody Funk in the neck and chest at a bus stop in the Rockwood neighborhood. Mr. Funk was found dead several blocks away. The men did not know each other.

On February 9, 2024 the defendant stabbed David McQuown, also a stranger who was experiencing homelessness, in the face and torso as he sat at a table outside a homeless shelter.
