DA Mike Schmidt charges defendant involved in fatal shooting of a 21-year-old in Gresham

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Today, District Attorney Mike Schmidt announced his office charged defendant Alec Baldridge for his involvement in the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old in Gresham that took place last Friday, August 13 near the victim’s residence.

Officers responded to reports of gunshots in the early hours of August 13 and arrived find the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. They located six bullet casings near the victim. Detectives with the Gresham Police Department canvassed the area surrounding the crime scene for surveillance video and obtained footage of a dark sedan driving into the area before the shooting, then departing the area afterwards. There was also a person observed on video walking alone in the area of the shooting.

Upon reviewing the victim’s phone, detectives learned that Baldridge and the victim agreed to meet that morning to settle a financial debt where Baldridge owed the victim a substantial amount of money. The two were in contact over the phone through text and video calling, with the last call occurring three minutes before the homicide.

While being interviewed Baldridge admitted to detectives he communicated with the victim and owed the victim money. Further investigation by Gresham Detectives revealed that Baldridge was at scene of the crime when the homicide occurred. Detectives also learned that Baldridge met with an individual at a convenience store approximately six hours prior to the homicide with the intention to buy a gun. This meeting was also confirmed by surveillance video.

The Multnomah District Attorney’s Office has charged the defendant with one count of second-degree murder and one count unlawful use of a weapon and was arraigned earlier this afternoon.
