DA Mike Schmidt announces indictment in cannabis shop robbery, murder investigation

PORTLAND, Ore. – Today, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt announced that a grand jury indicted Daniel Mugisha for the alleged murder of Michael Arthur.

According to the indictment, Mugisha intentionally killed Arthur using a firearm on December 14, 2020 during the course of a robbery and that on that same date Mugisha was in possession of, and used, a stolen vehicle. The vehicle belonged to a kindergarten teacher, according to information previously released by the Portland Police Bureau.

For the alleged crimes that occurred on December 14, 2020, Mugisha is charged with two counts of murder in the first degree with a firearm, three counts of murder in the second degree with a firearm, one count of robbery in the first degree with a firearm, one count of burglary in the first degree with a firearm, one count of possession of a stolen vehicle and one count of unauthorized use of a vehicle.

The indictment also alleges four counts of attempted murder in the second degree with a firearm, one count of robbery in the first degree with a firearm, and two counts of assault in the second degree with a firearm. These charges stem from November 23, 2020 where it is alleged that Mugisha attempted to murder four people using a firearm. It is alleged the robbery and shooting took place in the 1100 block of Northeast Holladay Street and resulted in two people being injured.

Mugisha is expected to be arraigned on Monday in Multnomah County Circuit Court.

No additional information can be released by the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office at this time.

A charging document is only an accusation of a crime. Mugisha is innocent unless and until proven guilty.
