David Michael Brown receives 70 month prison sentence for his role in the assault of Diego Tejeda-Manzo
Today, Multnomah County District Attorney Rod Underhill announced that David Michael Brown, 28, received a 70 month prison sentence after being convicted in May of one count of assault in the second degree and one count of assault in the third degree. This case is connected to the homicide of 21-year-old Diego Tejeda-Manzo.
This investigation started on November 7, 2017 when Portland Police responded to the Vue Apartments, located in the 1700 block of Southwest Park Avenue in Portland, Oregon, on reports of a disturbance and shooting.
Upon arrival, officers located Tejeda-Manzo on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound and significant facial injuries. Mr. Tejeda-Manzo died on scene.
During the investigation, law enforcement obtained evidence to show that on or about October 23, 2017, Tejeda-Manzo and Nicholas Hannan got into a fight.
Shortly after the altercation, Brown used social media to send threatening messages to a friend of Mr. Tejeda-Manzo. Those messages supported a retaliatory motive against Mr. Tejeda-Manzo, according to evidence presented at trial.
Witnesses described a group of men working together to violently beat Mr. Tejeda-Manzo. The group held Mr. Tejeda-Manzo down while others attacked. One man, later identified as Hannan, was witnessed stomping the victim’s face and head.
“On November 7, 2017, Diego Tejeda-Manzo was sought out, attacked and ultimately killed in an act of retaliation,” said Multnomah County Senior Deputy District Attorney Amity Girt, who prosecuted this case. “It was incredibly difficult for the victim’s family to know the horrific nature of the beating he endured just prior to being shot to death.”
When the fight ended, Mr. Tejeda-Manzo started to stand up. At that point, Hannan pulled out a gun and shot at Mr. Tejeda-Manzo seven times. During the investigation, law enforcement determined that Tejeda-Manzo was also armed with a handgun and returned fire.
Judge Gregory F. Silver ruled that the shoe Hannan wore, and the manner in which it was used during the assault of Mr. Tejeda-Manzo, was in fact a dangerous weapon, and determined that based on his participating in the fight, Brown was guilty of assault for aiding and abetting Hannan in causing physical injury to Tejeda-Manzo before he was shot.
On March 8, 2019, Hannan received a 15 year prison sentence for killing Mr. Tejeda-Manzo.
The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office recognizes the Portland Police Bureau, PPB Detective Rico Beniga, PPB Detective Scott Broughton and the numerous other law enforcement agencies that assisted on this case for their dedicated efforts working to solve Mr. Tejeda-Manzo’s homicide. The District Attorney’s Office also recognizes Victim Advocate Malia Bruni for assisting Mr. Tejeda-Manzo’s family during the judicial process, which lasted nearly two years.
