Tyler Pierce indicted on manslaughter charge following June 19, 2019 homicide in southeast Portland
Today, Multnomah County District Attorney Rod Underhill announced the filing of an indictment against 30-year-old Tyler Pierce for recklessly causing the death of another individual using a firearm.
The indictment charges Pierce with one count of manslaughter in the first degree, one count of unlawful possession of a firearm and one count of being in possession of a loaded firearm in a public place.
The charging document alleges that on June 19, 2019, Pierce unlawfully and recklessly, under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life, caused the death of 30-year-old Justin Stewart.
Furthermore, it is alleged in court documents that Pierce unlawfully and knowingly carried a firearm concealed on his person contrary to Oregon law, and that he unlawfully and knowingly possessed a firearm in a public place and recklessly failed to remove all of the ammunition from the firearm.
This investigation started June 19, 2019 at approximately 2:30 a.m. when Portland Police officers were dispatched to the area of Northeast Sandy Boulevard and Northeast Prescott Street on reports of a shooting. Law enforcement arrived and located Mr. Stewart suffering from critical injuries.
According to information previously released by the Portland Police Bureau, Mr. Stewart was transported to the hospital where he died.
Pierce has waived his right to a probable cause hearing. As such, no probable cause affidavit was filed in this case.
This remains an ongoing investigation and the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office is unable to release any additional details.
An indictment is only an accusation of a crime. Pierce is innocent unless and until proven guilty.
