David Michael Brown convicted of assault that preceded SW Portland homicide - 05/09/19

David Michael Brown convicted of assault that preceded SW Portland homicide

Today, Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Gregory F. Silver convicted 27-year-old David Michael Brown of one count of assault in the second degree and one count of assault in the third degree. This case is connected to the homicide of 21-year-old Diego Tejeda-Manzo.

At trial, the state presented evidence to show that on or about October 23, 2017, Tejeda-Manzo and Nicholas Hannan got into a fight.

Shortly after the altercation, Brown sent threatening social media messages to a friend of Tejeda-Manzo. Those messages supported a retaliatory motive against Tejeda-Manzo.

On November 7, 2017, Portland Police officers responded to the Vue Apartments, located at 1717 Southwest Park Avenue in Portland, Oregon on reports of a disturbance and shooting.

Upon arrival, officers located Tejeda-Manzo on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound and significant facial injuries.

Tejeda-Manzo died at the scene.

Witnesses described seeing a group of men working together to badly beat Tejeda-Manzo – including holding him down as the others struck him and beat him over a concrete planter, and one man, later identified as Hannan, stomping the victim’s face.

When the fight ended, Tejeda-Manzo started to stand up and Hannan pulled out a gun and shot at him seven times.

Judge Silver ruled that the shoe Hannan wore, and the manner in which it was used during the assault of Tejeda-Manzo, was in fact a dangerous weapon, and determined that based on his participating in the fight, Brown was guilty of assault for aiding and abetting Hannan in causing physical injury to Tejeda-Manzo before he was shot.

On March 8, 2019, Hannan received a 15 year prison sentence for killing Tejeda-Manzo. Additional details on that sentencing can be obtained by clicking here.

Brown will be sentenced on July 16, 2019.

No additional information can be released by the District Attorney’s Office at this time.
