Grand Jury Returns Seven-count Indictment Against Reza Chehrazi Mardani -01/30/19

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JANUARY 30, 2019

Grand jury returns seven-count indictment against Reza Chehrazi Mardani

Today, Multnomah County District Attorney Rod Underhill announced that 64-year-old Reza Chehrazi Mardani was arraigned on a seven-count indictment.

The indictment, which was filed on January 29, 2019, charges Mardani with one count of murder with a firearm, one count of attempted aggravated murder with a firearm, one count of assault in the first degree with a firearm, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon with a firearm, one count of aggravated animal abuse in the first degree with a firearm and one count of animal abuse in the first degree.

It is alleged in court documents that Mardani, on or about January 17, 2019, in Multnomah County, did unlawfully and intentionally cause the death of George Michael Atkeson and attempted to cause the death of Darlene Marie Kelley. Furthermore, it is alleged that Mardani, using a firearm, unlawfully and maliciously killed a dog named Mai Tai.

The defendant waived his right to a probable cause hearing. As such, there is no probable cause affidavit.

As previously stated by the Portland Police Bureau, this investigation started on January 17, 2019 when officers assigned to the Portland Police Bureau responded to the report of gunfire at a residence in the 5300 block of Northeast 74th Avenue. Officers and medical personnel arrived in the area and located Mr. Atkeson deceased and Ms. Kelley injured.

An autopsy performed by the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office determined Mr. Atkeson died of homicidal violence.

A copy of the indictment can be obtained using the Oregon eCourt Information (OECI) system under case number 19CR04482. The defendant’s next court date is scheduled for March 7, 2019.

This case is being prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Melissa Marrero.

This remains an ongoing investigation and no additional details will be released.

An indictment is only an accusation of a crime. The defendant is innocent unless and until proven guilty.
