Grand jury indicts man with murder following July 1st, 2018 homicide - 12/03/18

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DECEMBER 3, 2018

Grand jury indicts man with murder following July 1st, 2018 homicide

Today, Multnomah County District Attorney Rod Underhill announced that 27-year-old Daniel Troy Harwood was arraigned on a murder indictment.

The investigation into the death of Mr. Billy Mayfield, 37, began on July 1st, 2018 when officers with the Portland Police Bureau received information about gunfire in the 12200 block of Southeast Harold Street. Upon arrival, law enforcement located Mr. Mayfield suffering from critical injuries. He died while being transported to the hospital.

The Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office determined Mr. Mayfield died of homicidal violence.

On September 3, 2018, the Gresham Police Department took the defendant into custody at approximately 9:30 a.m. near the intersection of Northeast Burnside Street and North Main Avenue in Gresham, Oregon on an unrelated matter.

The defendant was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on allegations of being a felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of methamphetamine. A grand jury returned an indictment on September 11, 2018, for the alleged offenses that occurred on September 3, 2018 in Gresham. A copy of that indictment can be obtained using case number 18CR58480 in the Oregon eCourt Information (OECI) system.

The defendant has been in custody since his booking in September.

Based on information developed by the Portland Police Bureau Detective Division's Homicide Detail, a grand jury was convened to start reviewing evidence associated with the death of Mr. Mayfield.

An indictment was filed on November 30, 2018 and alleges that Harwood, a convicted felon, unlawfully and intentionally caused the death of Mr. Mayfield by using a handgun. The grand jury heard from a total of eight witnesses over a seven day period last month.

A copy of the indictment can be obtained using case number 18CR79615 in the OECI system.

The next court date scheduled for this case is January 14, 2019.

An indictment is only an accusation of a crime, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
