News Release
Grand jury returns not true bill following PPB, CCSO use of force on October 19, 2018 in Portland, Oregon - 11/27/18

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NOVEMBER 27, 2018

Grand jury returns not true bill following PPB, CCSO use of force on October 19, 2018 in Portland, Oregon

Today, Multnomah County District Attorney Rod Underhill announced that upon the conclusion of testimony, which was held over a two day period, a grand jury returned a not true bill regarding the use of force by a Portland Police Bureau officer and a Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office deputy that resulted in the injury of 29-year-old Jason Leo Hanson.

The grand jury’s not true bill decision means that they have determined no criminal prosecution is warranted for the two involved officers, and that the use of force against Hanson by Portland Police Officer Kameron Fender and Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Deputy Jon Campbell was a lawful act of self-defense and/or defense of a third person, pursuant to Oregon law.

The grand jury also returned a 10-count indictment against Hanson, which charges him with three counts of attempted aggravated murder with a firearm, two counts of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and one count each of being a felon in possession of a firearm, theft in the first degree, unlawful use of a weapon with a firearm, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and unlawful possession of methamphetamine.

According to information previously released, this investigation started on October 19, 2018 when Hanson exchanged gunfire with law enforcement near the intersection of Southeast 89th and Southeast Harney Street in Portland, Oregon.

The defendant was injured during the shooting and was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

On November 27, 2018, Hanson appeared before Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Shelley D. Russell. A plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf to all of the allegations listed in the indictment.

The defendant’s next court date is scheduled for January 7, 2019.

A copy of the indictment can be obtained using case number 18CR75097 in the Oregon eCourt Information (OECI) system.

Under Oregon law, because this case is now pending criminal prosecution, a transcript from the grand jury proceedings will be released to Hanson’s criminal defense attorney, but the transcript cannot be released to the public at this time.

An indictment is only an accusation of a crime, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
