News Release
Samuel D. Mason, 40, charged with attempted murder in connection with SE Portland shooting - 10/19/18

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OCTOBER 19, 2018

Samuel D. Mason, 40, charged with attempted murder in connection with SE Portland shooting

Today, Multnomah County District Attorney Rod Underhill announced that a six-count indictment accusing a 40-year-old man of attempted murder was unsealed.

The secret indictment was filed on August 8, 2018 and charges Samuel D. Mason with one count each of attempted murder with a firearm, attempted assault in the first degree with a firearm, assault in the second degree with a firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm with a firearm enhancement. Mason is also charged with two counts of unlawful use of a weapon with a firearm enhancement.

According to an affidavit filed in this case, on May 18, 2018, Portland Police officers responded to Rachel’s Bar and Grill, located at 12510 Southeast Division Street on reports of a shooting. Officers contacted the manager who reported that the shooting resulted after an argument ensued inside the establishment. Law enforcement collected video from the bar and identified Mason as the shooter. Furthermore, law enforcement later learned that a male victim arrived at Portland Adventist Medical Center with a single gunshot wound. The individual told police that he had been shot at Rachel’s Bar and Grill. Detectives assigned to the Portland Police Bureau’s Tactical Operations Division learned the people involved in the argument were rival gang members. The weapon used in this offense was a .38 revolver, according to court documents. After the shooting, the defendant fled to Arkansas, according to the affidavit.

Mason appeared before Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Melvin Oden-Orr on October 19, 2018 where he was arraigned on the indictment. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf. His next court date is scheduled for November 30, 2018.

The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office works closely with the City of Portland’s Office of Youth Violence Prevention and attends the bi-weekly Community Peace Collaborative meeting, which is a coalition of law enforcement, service providers and community members who are focused on encouraging people to take a stand against gun violence.

An indictment is only an accusation of a crime, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
