Chain Of Survival Allows 36 Year-Old Cardiac Arrest Survivor To Meet His EMS Rescuers (Photo) - 12/01/17

Media Invite What: Cardiac Survivor Meets Rescuers-Recognition Event When: December 2nd, 2017 at 3:30 pm Where: Metro West Ambulance, 5475 NE Dawson Creek Drive, Hillsboro On October 1st, Woodrow Danielson's family never expected he would go into cardiac arrest. Young, healthy, nothing out of the ordinary that day yet found by his family unresponsive, not breathing and with no pulse. 911 was called and CPR was started by his 17 year old daughter. Crucial steps in the chain of survival that includes recognition of an emergency and activation of the emergency response system along with immediate high-quality CPR. When Metro West Ambulance crew Thomas Vaughn and Jessica Escalona arrived two minutes later, they found him in Ventricular Fibrillation. After taking over CPR and delivering a shock to his heart, Metro West Ambulance Paramedics along with assistance from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crews continued CPR and delivered three more shocks to his heart along with providing Advanced Life Support care and interventions. Within 18 minutes of the 911 call being placed, Woodrow's heart started to be again. Enroute to St. Vincent's Emergency Room, he began to breathe on his own again and started to wake. The next links in the chain of survival-Rapid defibrillation and basic/advanced emergency medical services were completed. After transporting Woodrow code 3 (lights & siren) to St. Vincent's Hospital Emergency Room- his care was turned over to their waiting Emergency Room and Cardiac Cath teams completing the chain of survival with Advanced Life Support and Post-Arrest Care. On Saturday, December 2nd at 3:30 pm at Metro West Ambulance, Woodrow Danielson and his family will be able to meet his rescuers from all the links in the Chain of Survival. His daughter will be recognized with a Chain of Survival Coin along with the WCCCA 911 Calltaker, Metro West Ambulance Crews, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue Crews and St. Vincent Hospital Emergency Room & Cardiac Catheterization staff. All links in the Chain of Survival are critical. In Washington County, when 911 is alerted and CPR and/or AED's are used, survival rates for patients found in shockable rhythms ( Ventricular fibrillation/Ventricular tachycardia) soars to 45%. The national average is around 37%. Come join us as we celebrate a life saved!
