Meals On Wheels People To Appear In EU Open House Video May 9 - 05/07/20
Every year on May 9, the Delegation of the European Union to the United States and the Embassies of the EU Member States honor Europe Day by opening their doors to the public. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, the founding moment of today's European Union. Because they cannot welcome visitors to their embassies, they have transformed this popular tradition into a virtual two-part event that promotes social distancing and aids the recovery efforts combatting COVID-19.
On Saturday, May 9, at 7 a.m. (Pacific Time) the Delegation of the European Union to the United States and the Embassies of the EU Member States will launch a live broadcast on EUintheUS Facebook to kick off with “Stronger Together: Aiding the Recovery.” This one-hour show, hosted by Ambassador Stavros Lambrinidis, will highlight the brave work of frontline healthcare workers, call attention to the important mission of food banks, feature European companies stepping in to help across the United States, and underscore the need for the EU and the U.S. to work together in tackling the pandemic. In addition to luminaries such as chef José Andrés, Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, Washington Wizards players, European Space Agency Astronaut Andreas Mogensen, Finnish Opera singer Karita Mattila, and TV travel host Rick Steves, Meals on Wheels People of Portland, Ore. will be featured.
This will be followed by “HomeWithEU,” unique experiences native to all European Union Member States that can be enjoyed without leaving the house. Brought to you by all EU Member States, this event features online concerts, recipes of national dishes with how-to videos, virtual tours of cultural sites, museums, and much more. In an effort to encourage and support the public to save lives by social distancing, the EU showcases the diversity of its member states and provides exciting new cultural activities and experiences, which will remain online throughout the month of May at www.euopenhouse.org.

About Meals on Wheels People: Meals on Wheels People has been changing lives, one meal at a time, since 1970. We provide more than a meal to thousands of older adults in the greater Portland metro area. Our service not only alleviates hunger and social isolation, but allows seniors to live independently with dignity in their own homes. Aging in place reduces depression, falls and hospitalization as well as the high cost of institutional care. For more information, visit: mowp.org.
About the Delegation of the European Union to the United States: We promote EU policies in the United States, which includes presenting and explaining EU actions to the U.S. Administration and Congress. By engaging with political actors, the media, academia, business, and civil society, we raise awareness of EU issues and concerns, and promote the importance of the EU-U.S. relationship among the American public. We also analyze and report on the political, social, and economic situation in the U.S. to our headquarters in Brussels.
Since 1964, the EU has also maintained an office in New York, which now serves as the EU’s Mission to the United Nations.
The European Union Delegation to the United States began in 1954 as a small two-person information office for the newly-formed European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). Today, the EU Delegation is located at 2175 K Street NW and employs approximately 90 staff members, about 30 of whom are EU diplomats. For more information, visit: EUintheUS.org.
