***************

Last night, November 21st, at around 8:00 p.m., a ferry boat operator located a vehicle submerged in the Santiam River near the Buena Vista Ferry ramp. Deputies arrived on scene a short time later and with the assistance of fire personnel located the vehicle and what appeared to be a deceased, elderly person inside. Due to the darkness, cold weather and fast current deputies could not safely bring in a dive team to recover the vehicle.

This morning at 8:00 a.m., a dive team with the Linn County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and assisted in the recovery of the vehicle and the person inside. At this point deputies are investigating the case as a tragic accident. Deputies are not prepared to release any information pertaining to the driver or the vehicle until next of kin can be notified. More information will be released as it become available.
